Is it true that Saturn gives good results for the house that it sits in and bad results for the houses that it aspects, and the case is vice verse for Jupiter?

No, it's not always true. Saturn gives result as per Ascendant. In my case, I have Gemini Lagna and Saturn in 3rd house with Leo sign. Saturn's 3rd drishti on 5th house (house of education and children), 7th drishti on 9th house I.e. house of luck and 10th drishti on 12th house i.e. house of expenses. If you simply apply your rules on my chart, you can say that being sitting in enemy's sign Saturn will destroy all the things related to these houses. But I achieved higher education very easily. I come from a poor family but still I got admission in IIT without any coaching and also went to University of California for higher education. By Saturn’s blessings I have very caring wife, good job and children too. Most of the time people say that I am very lucky person. In my childhood, most of the astrologers suggested to my parents that this child will not get education and there will be troubles in his marriage. Most Important thing is that I got everything in my Sadhe Sati period. Then why I have got these things easily if Saturn is not good for me. For this look into the Gemini Ascendant chart carefully. Just ignore the sign in which Saturn is seating, just see that being the lord of 9th house Saturn is responsible for luck. His 3rd drishti is on his exalted sign (Libra) that gave me good education, 7th on his own sign that blessing me good luck. So this logic is always not true that Saturn's drishtis are not good. Most of the time astrologers give bad suggestions about Saturn. In my chart, mars gave very bad results during his period. Mars is also sitting in my 3rd house I.e. in his friend's sign but still gave very bad results due to lord of 6th and 11th house. I had to undergo 2 major surgeries due to an accident during Mars period. Being the Lord of 2 Kendra's house Jupiter is also not good for me. For Gemini Ascendant Jupiter is neutral due to lord of 2 kendra houses. I hope my answer will help you.

If you are referring to a specific phrase that is often used by astrologers, know this very clearly that the shloka has not been interpreted to its entirety. And largely misinterpreted out of context as well.

What the texts actually say is:

जीव क्षेत्र यदा शनि, शनि क्षेत्र यदा जीव |

स्थान हानि करोतु जीव, स्थान वृद्धि कर शनि ||

Which roughly translates as:

If Saturn is in the house of Jupiter and Jupiter is in the house of Saturn,

Saturn does more good to that house, ‘in relative comparison’ to Jupiter.

There are two ways to approach this apparent dilemma. I will share both and leave it to you to choose. But both are essentially the same.

Now since this question is about Jupiter and Saturn, it is important to understand the actual definition of the words ‘benefic’ and ‘malefic’ that is used in the context of these planets. In fact, these definitions are the chief culprit for a large number of confusion in astrology.

In Sanskrit, benefic and malefic are described as ‘Soumya’ and ‘Krura’ respectively. In literal translation this would mean, gentle and harsh. One can easily visualize these to two personalities as a pleasing ‘all season’ social worker and a severe ‘pound of flesh’ money lender. In conventional terms, one is a good guy, and the other is the bad chap.

But are they really?

The so called good guy is so good that he will help others even at the peril of his own family. Even if there is limited money to run his own home, he can’t refuse someone else asking for alms, and happily gives it away without thinking about their next meal. Sounds familiar? Look around, you will see quite a few in your own neighborhood as well.

This is quintessential Jupiter. The one that does more good to others as compared to its own residence. This is why Jupiter’s aspect on other planets and signs/houses is considered as the greatest divine grace and most beneficial, as compared to its own placement in a sign or house. Note that it will most certainly not damage its own home, but will do more good to others via its positive influence.

Now let’s come to the other chap – the embodiment of Hitler. This guy may harm others by his actions, but at any point of time, his own home is well protected. Very rarely will you come across an established don or money lender whose family does not live well. You may call him selfish, cruel and all sorts of names, but for sure he ensures there is no depravity at his place of dwelling. Again, not too rare to spot, right?

This is an archetype of Saturn. The one that does more damage to others through its influence vis-a-vis to where it sits. This is why Saturn’s aspect is the most feared in astrology as compared to its placement in a house or sign. Once again, by virtue of its inherent restrictive qualities it will not bring a lot of growth to where it’s placed in the horoscope, but it will not greatly damage that house in relation to the houses that it aspects.

Morale of the story – good or bad cannot be defined in absolute terms when it comes to astrology (and life in general too where its 50 shades of grey).

That’s one way to understand Saturn does more good to that house (where it’s placed), ‘in relative comparison’ to Jupiter, when each is posited in houses owned by the other.

Now let’s come to the second interpretation which is slightly more technical.

Jupiter is the planet of expansion and will naturally increase the signification of the house it sits in. On the other hand, Saturn is the planet of scarcity and will restrict (not deny) the significations of the house where it is placed.

However, there is an important difference to understand here.

For Jupiter, this expansion is limited to expanding the ‘living’ significations of the house and restricting the ‘non-living’ signification of the house. Jupiter in the second house can give one prominent eyes, majestic voice, a large family and so on. However, it will not increase your wealth and savings, although it is the karaka of wealth. Link it back to the charitable good guy example above and you will be able to work it out easily.

Coming to Saturn, the planet of scarcity, delay, sufferings etc, it’s the reverse. Saturn restricts the living signification of the house where it is posited and enhances the non-living significations. Using our second house example, as a rule, malefic planets in the second house (not just Saturn) may give a harsh voice, crooked teeth (with Mercury), smaller family etc, but it protects and expands the savings (provided it’s not heavily afflicted). This is because malefics, being selfish, has a tendency to hoard and accumulate the non-living significations, including wealth. On the side, for earnings, same rule applies with 11th house. Here too you can work out with the example of the bad guy from earlier.

Morale of the story – when placed in each other’s house, both Jupiter and Saturn, two of the most influential planets, tries to teach us lessons in their own way about what areas of life we need to improve on. It is entirely up to us to keep your senses alert and approach humble to learn from it.

I have deliberately not alluded to the specific results in each of the 4 houses or even ‘Kaarko Bhava Naasha’ or ‘Kendhradhi Pati Dosha’ (which often comes in to discussion wrt. this particular shloka) because it may lead to unnecessary confusion.

All one needs to remember are these very basis definitions and the significations of the concerned planet. But remember, it is the horoscope as whole that needs to be analysed for concrete results – not one-off rules in isolation.
